Our Trip West - Summer 2008

Hi everyone!

Now we'll tell you about our big trip out west this past summer. First we flew to Lethbridge, Alberta to visit our Grandma. After a week or so there we drove to Vernon, British Columbia to visit Aunt Karen, Uncle Pat and our cousins Zoe, Julia and Marlee. Cousin Laura drove up from Vancouver to visit us there with her kids Keara and baby Kate. It was a great trip. We had lots of fun! Here is what happened...

The pilot on our flight to Calgary was real nice. He let us sit up in the cockpit! (after we landed of course!) That's Captain Jin, Co-pilot Lili and navigator Daddy.

Here we are with Grandma at her house in Lethbridge. And here is a photo of us going for a walk in a park under the enormous train bridge that crosses the Old Man River.
One day we drove down to a place called Devil's Coulee, where paleontologists found dinsosaur bones, eggs and nests! Our guide led us around the site and showed us where they found these cool fossils. We even found a bone, lots of small pieces of egg shells and even some dino-pooh! Gross!

The next day we drove to the Birds of Prey Center in Coaldale. They take care of all sorts of owls, hawks, falcons and eagles. Even bald eagles! The coolest thing though was that they let us hold a real live owl. It was a bit scary, but they put thick gloves on us and they were cute little burrowing owls. Mommy and Daddy got to hold much larger owls.

After a real nice visit with Grandma we drove through the Rocky Monuntains to Vernon, BC where our Aunt Karen and Uncle Pat and our cousins live. It was a long drive - all day - and we got along - most of the time. We stopped at Rogers Pass, where we found some friendly marmots. And then we stopped in Craigellachie, BC where over 120 years ago the last spike was hammered in, completing the railway across Canada.

Here we are re-enacting the last spike (we are the ones in pink) at Craigellachie.

When we got to Aunt Karen's it was garlic harvest time. So we all pitched in to get it done. Aunt Karen has a huge garden. Lots of vegetables and flowers. The best part we liked was the berry patch. Almost every morning we went to the patch and picked blueberries and raspberries to eat with our breakfasts.

While we were away on our trip our dear old dog Laika died. She was staying at her favourite "doggie hotel". She got very sick there so they took her to the veterinarian but he couldn't help her, she was just too sick. We were all very sad. Mommy and Daddy especially because they had Laika since she was a puppy, 15 years ago. We will miss her very much.
